Transparency and informed choice

MedTransplant International Patient Rights

Every international patient deserves clear information, respectful coordination and the freedom to make informed decisions. These principles describe the standards MedTransplant seeks to uphold throughout the patient’s international treatment journey. Clinical rights and hospital obligations may also be governed by the treating institution and applicable laws.

  1. 01

    Right to Respect and Dignity

You have the right to respectful, culturally sensitive and non-discriminatory communication throughout the coordination process.

  2. 02

Right to Clear and Understandable Information

You have the right to receive available information about proposed hospitals, next steps, documentation requirements and known limitations in language that is as clear and understandable as reasonably possible.

  3. 03

    Right to Informed Choice

You have the right to ask questions, consider available options, seek another opinion and accept or decline a proposed hospital or pathway without pressure.

  4. 04

Right to Know Who Is Providing Each Service

You have the right to know whether you are communicating with a case manager, physician, hospital representative, interpreter or third-party service provider and to understand their respective roles.

  5. 05

Right to Preliminary and Final Opinions Being Distinguished

You have the right to understand that an Initial Medical Second Opinion is preliminary and record-based, while final diagnosis, eligibility, admission and treatment decisions belong to the receiving hospital and its treating physicians.

  6. 06

Right to Transparent Treatment Information and Costs

You have the right to receive available hospital quotations, known inclusions and exclusions, deposit requirements and material changes communicated to MedTransplant. Hospital estimates are not guarantees and may change for clinical or operational reasons.

  7. 07

    Right to Direct Hospital Payment

You have the right to pay hospital treatment charges directly to the treating hospital through its authorized payment channels. MedTransplant does not collect the hospital’s treatment charges unless a separate, lawful and expressly disclosed arrangement is agreed in writing.

  8. 08

Right to Understand MedTransplant’s Financial Relationships

You have the right to know that MedTransplant may receive institutional compensation from participating hospitals. You are not required to pay MedTransplant a referral commission for the standard coordination services described on the Why MedTransplant page.

  9. 09

Right to Know About Third-Party Charges

You have the right to be informed of available quotations or known charges for third-party services—such as flights, accommodation, transfers, interpreters or medical transportation—before the relevant service is confirmed whenever reasonably possible.

  10. 10

Right to Privacy and Authorized Information Sharing

You have the right to expect reasonable safeguards for your personal and medical information and to be informed that international treatment coordination may require authorized cross-border disclosure to hospitals, physicians and relevant service providers.

  11. 11

    Right to Ethical Transplant Care

You have the right to a pathway that does not involve organ sales or organ brokering and that respects transplant-centre, ethical and governmental requirements.

  12. 12

    Right to Continuity of Coordination

You have the right to reasonable communication and coordination throughout the agreed pathway, including hospital preparation, treatment-period facilitation, discharge planning and post-discharge communication with the hospital where applicable.

  13. 13

Right to Raise a Concern or Complaint

You have the right to raise concerns about MedTransplant’s coordination services and to receive information about the applicable complaint-handling process without retaliation.

  14. 14

    Patient Responsibilities

To support a safe and effective pathway, patients and authorized representatives are responsible for providing accurate and complete information, disclosing relevant medical history, following treating clinicians’ instructions, meeting payment and travel requirements, respecting hospital policies and immediately seeking local emergency care when necessary.
